Difference Between MediaTek and Snapdragon. Which One is Better?

There is no doubt, one of the most complex smartphone themes are their processors. In today’s modern-day, we all have smartphones ,whether it is a budget device, mid-range phone or a flagship one. While most of the people now do a little research online before buying a new smartphone, as to which one can turn out to be the best device for them as per their usage and budget, there are still a lot of people who buy a new device just on the basis of its glossy stylish looks. People don’t pay attention to the most important part of the smartphone which is its processor. And, when we talk about processor, the first question comes in our mind is Qualcomm Snapdragon and MediaTek, which one is better? So, let’s find that out in this blog.

What is a Processor in a Smartphone?

A Processor is the most important part of smartphone or rather good to say it’s the brain of your smartphone. This component converts all your actions into visual changes on the screen in a smartphone. The performance of your smartphone depends upon on the processor. The activities of anything that you do on the phone right from opening various applications, browsing on the internet, playing games, etc., all depends on the processor. Thanks to the number of cores and certain clock speed the actions are always processed blink of eyes. The better the processor, the smoother the experience and less time consuming. Now a days There are two very popular smartphone processor brands in market. They are – Qualcomm Snapdragon and MediaTek Helio.

Now the question comes

What is MediaTek?

MediaTek is producer of the affordable yet and powerful Helio chipsets. MediaTek processors commonly avaliable in Sony smartphones and also in weaker devices by Chinese manufacturers.

MediaTek’s main advantage over Qualcomm and Exynos is the price that can be up to two times lower, roughly the same performance. However, user experiences are not that good at all.

The biggest problem for MediaTek’s processors is the extremely rapid warming and reach of high temperatures (Snapdragon 810 had the same problem).

Among the latest models are Helio X10, P10 and X20, Benchmark testing shows that the X20 is ranked with Snapdragon 820, but still it doesn’t find the place to the premium smartphone class.

By purchasing a device with MediaTek processor has so many limits itself (in most cases) to a smartphone in a lower middle class or some start-up model.

Characteristics of  MediaTek:

  • Not so economical chipset – Big battery consumer.
  • Greater heating rate due to a number of processor cores.
  • A small, graphic chip that is not produced by MediaTek is integrated within this chipset.
  • Process power is supreme.
  • In general chipsets offer more cores per processor.

What is Snapdragon?

Qualcomm processors are best for their Snapdragon series. Thanks to the Snapdragon 820 it is the best processor in the market.

This premium model of processor found in some of the best smartphones of today. The best Chinese mobile phones – Xiaomi mi 5, OnePlus 3 , LG Gs , Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge (Chinese and American market) and HTC 10.

The fact that Samsung has moved away from its own Exynos chip is enough to prove about the quality of the Snapdragon. Qualcomm currently holds 65 percent of the 4G LTE market, and is particularly in China, where the 5 largest manufacturers use mainly snapdragon processors (Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE, TCL, Lenovo).

The main advantages of Snapdragon in comparison to previous models is speed, low energy consumption, 40% improvement in graphics.

Characteristics of Snapdragon:

  • The most secure chipset – very little use of battery.
  • Less heat compared to Intel or MediaTek.
  • Adreno, a graphics plug produced by Qualcomm, is always part of this chipset.
  • Benchmark tests often show that the performance of the Snapdragon chipset is better than the MediaTek

Qualcomm Snapdragon or MediaTek – Which One is Better?

The answer to this question is too hard to explain in a single word. There are various processors from both brands which power various smartphones in different price. In some cases, Snapdragon is better while in others, MediaTek bright. But, if we talk in general, MediaTek primarily focuses on low budget and mid-range smartphones. The company’s chipsets commonly found inside a lot of mid-range phones. In 2019, the company launched the Helio G90T chipset that made its debut with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro and it amazed everyone with its fantastic performance.

Talking about Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, the company makes processors for various categories, for different budget, mid-range, and even flagship smartphones. However, in recent times, the company has been focusing on mid-range and flagship processors only and even on 5G chipsets. In the mid-range segment, Qualcomm Snapdragon’s processors are a bit lacking compare to the MediaTek Helio series chipsets with same solution in gaming performance as the new-age Helio chipsets are really good.

It is being said that, in day to day usage, Snapdragon takes the lead and in flagship smartphones, no one can even come closer to the Snapdragons.

Difference Between MediaTek and Snapdragon

  1. Origin of MediaTek and Snapdragon

MediaTek is international semiconductor company founded in 1997 with headquarters in Hsinchu‎, Taiwan. Snapdragon are processors produced by Qualcomm, which is also an international semiconductor and IT equipment manufacturer company, with headquarters in San Diego, California, U.S. It was founded in 1985.

  1. Processor cores in MediaTek and Snapdragon

Both MediaTek and Snapdragon are multicore processors (1-2-4-6-8-10). MediaTek has started trial production of a 12 core chipset. However, we should have in mind that it’s less important how many cores the processor contains, and more what cores are doing the performance must be the best.

  1. CPU and GPU in MediaTek and Snapdragon

Comparing MediaTek and Qualcomm purely from the standpoint of performance, there is almost no difference in terms of CPU, but it’s clear that the graphics part is better for the Adreno GPU installed in all Snapdragon SoCs. This is especially noticeable in the high end segment. in GPU performance both are nearly same in the mid-range and low-end segment. Qualcomm produces and uses its own graphics chips that are best to work with the processor and other components in smartphone.

  1. Battery life of MediaTek and Snapdragon

MediaTek chipsets are high power consuming which results in shortened battery life. But They are trying improve their processors to be less energy consumable but are still behind Snapdragon.

  1. Performance

Performance wise MediaTek’s processors are really good in performing. Their extra core processors are able intensive and heavy task performance and they are very good at multi-tasking, But in Other hand Snapdragon has even better performance in multi-tasking and handling heavy and intensive tasks and gaming also.

  1. Heating

Snapdragon processors are generally have less heating problem compared to MediaTek.

  1. Cost of MediaTek and Snapdragon

MediaTek SOCs are more cheaper than similar Qualcomm solutions.

Qualcomm Snapdragon vs MediaTek – Pros and Cons

  • MediaTek’s new mid-range chipsets are very good for gaming and other tasks.
  • Smartphones powered by MediaTek chipsets are slightly cheaper than their Snapdragon counterparts.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon Processors tend to have slightly better battery optimization.
  • MediaTek still doesn’t share the Kernel source code with the general public for most SoCs.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon Chipsets are fully optimized with most apps, MediaTek slightly lacks behind.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon has its own optimised in-house GPU (Adreno).
  • Smartphones powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon are slightly more expensive.

Summary of MediaTek vs. Snapdragon

Generally speaking, the processing power and speed of both chipsets is generally high. However, the differences between them are mostly in battery consumption, i.e. efficiency, as well as endurance. According to our experience Snapdragon is a more powerful and reliable chipset than MediaTek, but in other hand MediaTek is therefore a much more cost-efficient variant.
